Translation, 2 Kings 10

By Peter Leithart

Now to ‘Achav [were] seventy sons in Shomron And wrote Jehu’ scrolls And he sent [to] Shomron to the princes of Yizre’e’l, the elders And to the trustees of ‘Achav, saying, “Now you yourselves according to the entering of this scroll to you And with you [are] the sons of your master And with you the chariotry and the horses and a city of fortification and the armory: And see the good and the upright from the sons of your master And set [him] on the throne of his father. And fight on behalf of the house of your master.”

But they feared very, very much, and they said, “Look! Two of the kings did not stand before his face. Now can can we stand, we ourselves?” And sent [the one] which was over the house And which [was] over the city And the elders and the trustees to Yehu’, saying, “Your servants are we ouselves. Now all which you say to us we will do. We will not cause a man to reign-as-king. The good in your eyes do.” And he wrote to them a scroll, a second, saying, “If to me [are] you yourselves and my voice you yourselves [are] hearing, Take the heads of the men of the sons of your master And enter to me according to the time tomorrow at Yizre’e’l.” Now the sons of the king, seventy men, [were] with the great-ones of the city [who were] making-them-great. And it was according to the entering of the scroll to them And they took the sons of the king And they slaughtered seven men And they set their heads in basked And they send to him at Yisre’e’l. And entered the messenger And he reported to him, saying, “They have caused-to-enter the heads of the sons of the kings.” And he said, “Set them two piles [at] the doorway of the gate until morning.” And it was in the morning And he went out and he stood and he said to all the people, “Righteous you [are]. See! I myself conspired against my master And I kill him. But who struck all these? Know then for it shall not fall from the word of Yahweh to earth [anything] which speaks Yahweh over the house of ‘Achav. Now Yahweh made/done what he spoke by the hand of his servant ‘Eliyyahu.” And struck Yehu’ all the remnant to the house of ‘Achav in Yizre’e’l And all his great-ones And all his acquaintances And his priests Until none he caused-to-remain to him as a survivor.

And he rose and entered and walked/went to Shomron He himself [at] Binding-house of the Shepherds in the way. And he himself found the brothers of ‘Achazyahu king of Yehudah And he said, “Who are you?” And they said, “Brothers of ‘Achazyahu we ourselves. And we come down for peace of the sons of the king and the sons of the great-lady.” And he said, “Seize them living.” So they seized them living And slaughtered them to the cistern of the Binding-house, forty and two men. And a man did not remain from them.

And he went/walked from there and found Yehonadav son of Chariot to call him And he blessed him and he said to him, “Is your heart upright just as my heart with your heart?” And said Yehonadav, “It is.” “And it is give your hand.” And he gave his hand And he ascended to him to the chariot. And he said, “Come/walk with me and seen in my zeal/jealousy for Yahweh.” And they charioted him in his chariot. And he entered Shomron and he struck all the remnant to ‘Achav in Shomron until he destroyed according to the word of Yahweh which he spoke to ‘Eliyyahu.

And gathered Yehu’ all the people and he said to them “‘Achav served the Ba’al little. Yehu’ serves him abundantly. And now, al the prophets of the Ba’al, all his servants and all his priests call to me. A man do not let be missing. For a sacrifice, a great one, for me to Ba’al All who are missing shall not live.” But Yehu’ did in cunning so that he might serve-punishment [to] the servants of the Ba’al. And said Yehu’. “Sanctify an assembly to Ba’al.” And they called. And sent Yehu’ in all Yisrael And entered all the servants of the Ba’al And a man did not remain which did not enter. And they entered the house of the Ba’al And they filled the house of the Ba’al from here to there. And he said to [him] who was over the wardrobe, “Cause-to-come-out clothing for all the servants of the Ba’al.” And he caused-to-come-out the clothing. And entered Yehu’ and Yehonadav son of Chariot to the house of the Ba’al, And he said to the servants of the Ba’al, “Uncover and see let there is here with you from the servant of Yahweh. If the servants of Ba’al alone.” And they entered to do sacrifices and ascensions

But Yehu’ set to him outside eighty men and said “The man who saves from the men which myself cause-to-enter on your hand his soul in the place of his soul.” And it was according to his finishing to do the ascension and said Yehu’ to the runners and to the officers, “Enter! Strike them! A man shall not come forth!” And they struck them to the mouth of the sword And they threw them, the dunners and the officers, And they went/walked until the city of the house of the Ba’al. And they caused to come out the pillar of the house of the Ba’al And they burned it. And they torn down the pillar of the Ba’al And they tore down the house of the Ba’al And they set it as a latrine until the day. And destroye Yehu’ the Ba’al from Yisrael. Except: the sins of Yarav’am son of Debat which he caused-Yisrael-to-sin Yehu did not turn back from after them. The calves of gold which [were] at Beyt-El and which were in Dan. And said Yahweh to Yehu’, “Because you did good to do the upright-thing in my eyes According to all which was in my heart you did to the house of ‘Achav, the sons of the fourth shall sit for you on the throne of Yisrael.”

Now Yehu’ did not guard to walk in the Torah of Yahweh the Elohim oif Yisrael in all his heart. He did not turn from over the sins of Yarav’am which he caused-Yisrael-to-sin. In those days Yahweh began to ruin in Yisrael. And Chaza’el struck in all the territory of Yisrael, From the Yarden, the rising of the son, all the land of Gil’ad, the Gadiy and the Ru’vbeniy, and the Menashiy from ‘Aro’er which was over the wadi of ‘Arnon And the Gil’ad and Bashan. Now the remnant of the deeds/words of Yehu and all which he did And all his mighty-deeds Are they not written on the scroll of the words/deeds of the days for the kings of Yisrael. And Yehu’ slept with his fathers And they buried him in Shomron. And reigned-as-king Yeho’achaz his son in his place. And the days which Yehu’ reigned-as-king over Yisrael twenty-eight years in Shomron.
