By Peter Leithart

Son of seven years [was] Yeho’ash in his reigning-as-king. In the seventh year to Yehu’ reigned-as-king Yeho’ash And forty years he reigned-as-king in Yrushalaim. And the name of his mother was Tzivyah from Be’er-sheva’. And did Yeho’ash the upright-thing in the eyes of Yahweh All the days which Yehoyada’ the priest instructed him. Except the high places they did not turn aside. Still the people sacrificing and turning-to-smoke on the high places.

And said Yeho’ash to the priests, “All the silver which is sanctified which is caused-to=enter the house of Yahweh - the silver of the passing-over of each,

the silver of the souls of his value all the silver which ascends on the heart of a man to cause-to-enter the house of Yahweh - Let the priests take for them each from his seller. And they themselves shall strengthen the breach of the house To all which [each places where] is discovered there a breach.”

And it was in twenty-third year to the king Yeho’ash the priests did not strengthen the breach of the house. And called the king Yeho’ash to Yehoyada’ the priest and to the priests, And he said to them, “Why are you not strengthening the breach of the house. But now do not take silver from the sellers For to the breach of the house you shall you shall give it.” And they consented, the priests, to not take the silver from the people And to not strengthen the breach of the house. And took Yehoyada’ the priest a coffer And bore a hole in its door. And he gave it beside the altar on the right in the entering of a man [to] the house of Yahweh. They gave there, the priests, guardians of the threshold All the silver from those entering the house of Yahweh.

And it was according to their seeing that much of the silver in the coffer And ascended the scribe of the king and the great priest And they encircled and they counted the silver which was found in the house of Yahweh. And they gave the silver which was weighed over the hand of the doers of the work who were appointed in the house of Yahweh. And they caused-it-to-go-out to the craftsmen of the wood And to the builders who were doing on the house of Yahweh And to the stone-builders and to the stone-craftsmen of the stone And for buying wood and stone of stone-craftsmen To strengthen the breach of the house of Yahweh And for all which went forth on the house to strengthen. Howbeit they did not do in the house of Yahweh basins of silver snuffers sprinkling-bowls trumpets all the utensils of gold and utensils of silver from the silver caused-to-enter the house of Yahweh. For to the doers of the work they gave it And they strengthened with it the house of Yahweh.

And they did not account the men who they gave the silver on their hand to give to do the work for in faithfulness they were working. Silver of the trespass-offering And silver of the purification-offering were not caused-to-enter the house of Yahweh. To the priests they were. At that time ascended Chaza’el king of ‘Aram And he fought against Gath and captured her. And Chaza’el set his face to ascend against Yerushalaim. And took Yeho’ash king of Yehudah all the sacred-things which consecrated Yehoshafat and Yhoram and ‘Achazyahu his fathers, kings of Yehudah And his sacred things and all the gold which was found in the treasuries of the house of Yahweh and the house of the king And he sent to Chaz’el king of ‘Aram. And he went up from over Yerushalaim. Now the remnant of the words/deeds of Yo’ash and all which he did Are they not themselves writings on the scrolls of the words/deeds of teh days to the kings of Yehudah. And arose his servants and conspired a conspiracy And the struck Yo’ash in the house of Millo’ going down [to] Silla’. Now Yosavad son of Shim’at (hearing) And Yhosavad son of Shomer (guarding) his servants they struck him and he died. And they buried him with his fathers in the city of David. And reigned-as-king ‘Amatzyah his son in his place.
